Can Teenagers Raise Children On Their Own?

Visual texts are widely accepted as being very informative owing to the saying that “pictures speak for themselves”. However, a lot of caution must be taken especially in the analysis of visual images as these images are prone to manipulations so that the objective they are meant to achieve can be met. Reading visual text requires one to understand, do correct interpretation and finally analyse. In the visual text we are seeking to analyse, we shall seek to ask ourselves certain questions in order to find out whether its objective is met.

Source of text

Our visual text of analysis is an advertisement of a young kid on one of the media; probably the television. In the visual text, there is some writing that accompanies the image that delivers the message of the disturbed kid to the mother. The writings seek to establish whether the mother of this kid has the capacity to bring up the kid in a situation where parents are not together. So how far for the teens is too far? The complementing message touches on a very crucial issue that requires all the affected parties to contribute. The question is “will you make it on your own?” Let us examine this in our analysis:

The Body

It is interesting to read the comments the kid is making to the mother. The kid appears to have a very clear and firm resolve that the mother will not manage to fully support her when the dad withdraws. As the controversy is unveiled in NYC, the visual text used in this case shows the worry among the parties concerned. The writing that goes alongside the text shows that there are persons who are out to rewrite or redefine the limits the teen is supposed to maintain. The text in this case wants to caution and also serve as a wakeup call.

The persons behind the visual text can be said to be interested parties either directly-for instance parents-or indirectly for example some organisations. The text is an advertisement on a site that is accessible to all hence it is meant to target a wide group of people especially the young people. It also targets parents and the guardians who are responsible for giving advice to the teenagers. The stance of the editor on the visual image is that this controversial issue should be addressed comprehensively to ensure that the rate of teenage pregnancy is checked. This is evidenced by the question that he poses; “how far is far?”

The visual text can be said to be educative as well as informative. The messages in the text have clear evidence that the rising incidences of teenage pregnancy may soon be out of control. The writer of this text in this instance wishes to create awareness among the persons involved so as to look into the factors that have led to the increase in such cases. Some of the examples include parental neglect, teenage curiosity to explore their reproductive life, and the influences on the teens that prompts them to indulge into sex before marriage.

The writer of the visual text wishes to caution teens on the disadvantages of early marriages and the negative impact to their babies. Among the tough consequences they risk falling victim to include being a single parent. This unquestionably interrupts their education life and destroys their public image as well. The child’s assertion that the mother will not make on her own shows that the teenagers are not ready for family life. The creator of the visual art has successfully manipulated the text. The question posed to the mother by the kid and the posture of the baby in the visual text capture the viewer’s attention.

Different people would react differently to a visual text with such kind of a message. In this regard, every person who has the welfare of the teens at heart will rise and do something to help them. This may be in form of advice or even through financing such a promotion. A well-crafted text could illicit emotions that would make people respond and help solve the controversy. Every right thinking person would not wish to see the child posing such a touching question to him or her.

In my observation, the visual text has served its purpose by reminding people that the issue at hand is of great concern. To the teenagers, it has reminded them that they should review their principles and hence know how to react to various situations. It is clear they are not capable of child rearing and should avoid the risk that comes with teenage pregnancy. In addition to that, it is evident that child rearing requires the combined effort of the two parents. The presence of both parents is equally important during the growth of the child.

The target group for the visual message has been reached. Generally speaking, the purpose of the visual text was achieved.
